Kensington Kinetic Sculpture Derby Day – Sat May 18

Wednesday, May 8th, 2013

The Kensington Kinetic Sculpture Derby (KKSD) is an amazing and totally unique  design competition and parade of human powered vehicle floats.  Enjoy this spectacle as well as a lively Arts Festival!

A Kinetic Sculpture is a human-powered vehicle that also has an artistic theme. Think of parade floats on bicycles, or mummers on hand crank driven pirate ships, or an alien space ship on welded bikes, it’s a bar and bar stools on a bike, it’s anything you can dream up. A Kinetic Sculpture Competition is all about fun and ingenuity, making the wackiest, most interesting contraption is the goal- finishing the course or winning is not.  Kinetic Sculpture Competitions have been taking place all over the world since 1969 when a California artist named Hobart Brown made some artistic improvements to his son’s tricycle.

Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts (PIFA) – Street Fair April 27

Friday, April 19th, 2013

On a beautiful day in 2011, I took one of my typical strolls in the city, enjoying spring, planning to meet up with friends at the first PIFA street festival. I wasn’t sure what to expect; I assumed this would be much like other street festivals, which I love, but I was extremely impressed at the incredible style and elegance of the PIFA fest – and still loads of fun, too. The highlight were those incredible acrobats playing bells dangling above Broad Street – it was ethereal, athletic, surreal, beautiful, mesmerizing. The 2011 PIFA street fair drew thousands and great crowds are expected to this year’s event on April 27.  I can’t wait to be surprised and delighted yet again.
