Through the Schoolhouse Door

Through the Schoolhouse Door offers a collection of experiences about connecting students into communities to learn about folk culture. It is full of good ideas and examples of projects with an in-school curriculum and community projects. We don’t connect often with the work of folklorists, but this book makes a great link between their work and that of teaching artistry.

“A fresh, innovative, and necessary contribution. Teachers need to contemplate the reasoned advice threaded throughout the chapters of this compendium of essays, that ‘out-of-school experience is the great unspoken curriculum.’”

Cool Spherical Camera Captures Photographer’s Imagination!

Monday, February 20th, 2012

Today I present the Throwable Panoramic Ball Camera which captures a full spherical panorama when thrown into the air. At the peak of its flight, which is determined using an accelerometer, a full panoramic image is captured by 36 mobile phone camera modules.

The Throwable Panoramic Ball Camera is a concept device put together by Jonas Pfeil which is not only designed for throwing, but in doing so, takes a 360° panorama of wherever you are. This innovative camera uses 36 cellphone camera sensors placed around the outside of the ball, protected by foam. When you grab the ball and throw it into the air, the onboard accelerometer calculates the apogee — the point where the ball is stationary at the top of the arc — and it captures the entire scene.

Squire is the founder of Hidden City Philadelphia – festival, online magazine, tour company.  He will address the yearning for history in pop culture: from the prison fantasies of Piranesi to Mayan expedition drawings, Indiana Jones, “National Treasure” and “Tomb Raider;” from the retro-chic of Restoration Hardware and Anthroplogie to online gaming and the emerging photo genre of “ruin porn.”
