UArts PIE workshop for Art Teachers – April 16

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

Teachers enjoy a day of artistic studio practice from an inspiring artist

I wanted to spread the word about a one-day workshop being offered by the Professional Institute for Educators (PIE) on April 16 at UArts, specifically for art teachers to lead the next generation of artists and designers.  If you know a teacher, or are one yourself, please check out this event — teachers can take these skills right back to their students who are interested in entering design, media and art professions.  Please share this info with any teachers you know; art teachers gain so much by spending time with their artist colleagues.

Inspiration – Chip Kidd and Ellen Lupton

Tuesday, March 29th, 2011

Let me begin by professing my design crush on the work of designer extraordinaire Chip Kidd, well known for book jacket design. Described as “the closest thing to a rock star” in graphic design (USA Today), Chip Kidd is recognized as an American master of contemporary book design.  At the forefront of publishing, Kidd’s iconic covers, with their inventive marriage of type and found images, have influenced an entire generation of design practitioners in many fields.

Is a Great Pic Possible with Your iPhone?

Monday, March 28th, 2011

This summer we will offer a Street Photography course – the type of candid, documentary photography practiced by such luminaries as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Garry Winogrand, Roy deCarava, Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander, William Klein, Helen Levitt, Lisette Model, Weegee and others. The course description  includes the following – this course is open to all levels and all camera types from cell phones to point-and-shoot, to digital SLRs. The inclusion of the cell phone as a viable photographic device prompted a student to express her surprise that we would allow students to use a cell phone to make images. This got me thinking about the nature of creativity and reminded me of what Chase Jarvis says, “the best camera is the one that’s with you!”

Interview: Maria Jose Silva- Print Design Certificate Student

Monday, March 21st, 2011

1. What were your expectations of the certificate program and how did you first hear about it?

When I arrived to Philadelphia two years ago, I wanted to study graphic design. I researched all the art schools in the area and decided to continue my education at UArts because the certificate program would be the most useful for my goal of starting my own design agency.

2. What was your education in design before enrolling in the certificate program?
